About Our 2019 Showreel

WE THE STORYTELLERS

In this blog, Ben Joseph, Redscope Founder and Senior Editor, talks you through his selections for Redscope’s 2019 Showreel.

Our passion is storytelling.
Each year, the showreel is our chance to showcase the best bits of our work. It’s a visual all you can eat buffet and it’s multilayered, something new pops through each time you watch it.

FRAME BY FRAME

The opening frame is dark and suspenseful - it’s taken from a music video we produced with OTG (@otgoffical). The video was a heist (if Guy Richie did music videos). Straight off the bat, we want to let you know something cool is coming.

In contrast with the darkness and suspense, you meet the beautiful and feminine Don De L’amour. The boutique florist is chic and high-fashion, the film was shot in Paris and feels like a love story.

Bringing it back home to the Blue Mountains, the stakes are raised and we see the main character, the highliner, dangling in the sky overlooking the breathtaking landscapes. We worked with Climbing Anchors (Instagram @climbinganchors) to create a promotional video for their brand.

Flashing to Japan, in the bright lights of the big city we meet Kim Dao, an Australian based influencer (@kimdao). This was for Sony (@sonyaustralia). In 2019 we travelled all over the world with Sony and met some awesome humans.

The showreel picks up momentum, the fast cuts are a flurry of our favourite campaigns. It’s extremely hard to choose our favourites - every bit of work had something we want to show.

The crescendo includes: Adidas (@adidas), artists Jai Waetford (Instagram @jaiwaetford), OTG (Instagram @otg.official) and Adidas ambassador Mimi (Instagram @mimilashiry), Boutique Hair Studio USFIN (Instagram @usfinatelier).

We refocus with blue stills from an Adidas shoot in Melbourne. It was supposed to be dark during the shoot - that’s the look and feel the client wanted, but it was still light. We were running around trying to create ways to make it dark. We ended up in a car park experimenting with lighting - the results are cool, a street fashion-vibe with an arty/night club feel.

We produced content for some of the coolest events in Sydney, the shots shuffle through:

  • The Colour Run in Sydney Olympic Park (Instagram @thecolourrun),

  • Osmo Action Camera with DJI (Instagram @djiglobal),

  • Ultra Festival (Instagram @ultra),

  • Chinese New Year at The Galleries, featuring art works of Chris Yee and Jaguar Jonze (Instagram @thegalleries @yeethebeast @jaguarjonze),

  • And QVB After Dark (@theqvb).

Animation plays a crucial role in making the product come to life and be visually interesting for their audience. The collaboration with Sonos and Ikea is a brilliant example of how we can take something that isn’t wild (the static speaker) and make it visually dynamic. (Instagram @sonos and @ikea)

Vienna and Adam went to New Zealand with Sony and Stefan Haworth (Instagram @stefan_haworth). The goal of the trip was to produce an infinite amount of content for future use. We lost count of the videos, images and animations we came away with. Part of our skill set is helping brands make something out of nothing. We can take ideas, products and give the client the result they need.

For the first time, we’ve purposely included ourselves in the show reel. Just micro-flashes of us behind the scenes. We want to include who we are and our passions because it shapes how we work, who we want to work with and is what differentiates us from other studios.

The showreel is interspersed with our passions; we believe film making works best with a little bit of each of us brought to the table, like all great art. With work with our clients to create something breath-taking for their brand and to tell their story. When we get to lean on our experiences and passions this process becomes that much easier.

Ben is an outdoorsy-guy into rock climbing, surfing and adventures. Adam’s has his pulse on urban-cool his creativity leans to B-boy, dance, fashion and street culture. Hayden is a musician and content producer, into fashion and dramatic lighting and Instagram curation. Rolando is a narrative film editor passionate about documenting music, film and culture.
